Introduction

This is my first time attempting this blogging thing. I am a fourty-something year old woman, employed since I was 23. I am a research scientist, previously employed by a major university in NYC and most recently by a major pharmaceutical company in northern NY. We moved up here with our two kids, bought a house, even had another child and had a glimpse of the American dream.

My husband's health wasn't great in the Big City, so we made the big move. We were both working for the same employer (big mistake). His position was terminated in 1998. Mine was preserved. It took him 6 months to find another job. He found one in California. It has a very hard decision to make, but we have been apart before, so nothing new. We were apart for 4 months. It was horrible. We missed all the holiday season together: Thanksgiving to St. Patrick. Eventually he got even sicker and had to come back home. I went to Ca and we drove back together. What a trip!

He has been home for 13 months, waiting for Social Security dissability and on the side, trying to get a low stress job to see if it is better for him to slowly enter the work force, but finding a job is stressful enough. We lived on 40% of our income from March 09 to present time.

On February 2010 we were able to sell the house and my position was eliminated, along with everyone else's (600 employees). I started filling applications on line. Our only option will be to go back to NYC, since there is better opportunities there. Since February I have had one in person interview and 4 phone interviews with headhunters. What a joke this people are! They know nothing about the jobs they are trying to fill and have no idea how to conduct an interview. I have applied to every lab and university in the Big Apple.

Out of the blues I got an e-mail from one of the technicians in the lab where I last worked in NYC. When I called her, she gave me the number for the manager of the clinic. Of course, I called her and she said that she came across my resume on-line and decided to give me a call after discussing it with the Medical Director. She said she would call back on Monday (last Monday) to set up an interview when he was available. The call never came, bit I know is a very busy place and she is not the most organized person in the world. Today (Thursday) I decided to giver her a call to find out what is going on. She was very embarassed for not calling. She couldn't find the words to tell me that they were going to hire a temp to fill the position. I never even had a chance to interview for the job. When I left my job I kept all my doors open. My relationships were well established and all was good.

Don't this people meet and discuss how the hiring is going to be done? I am so angry. They kept me waiting for almost a week holding my hopes up to then drop me a bomb like that. I guess is back to Monster and Career Builders for me.

This is my story, I guess I will take it from here when I come back. Have to admit, this wasn't so bad.
